Kaido House: Custom JDM Culture in 1:64, Made With Mini GT
Share
Few 1:64 brands have a look as instantly recognisable as Kaido House. Wide fenders, loud liveries and cars that look as if they just rolled out of a Japanese street-racing meet: this is custom car culture shrunk to pocket size. Here is what the brand is, where it comes from and how its cars fit into a collection.
Who Is Behind Kaido House?
Kaido House is the custom-styling brand of designer Jun Imai. According to its website, it is based in Los Angeles and covers car design, art, apparel and real car projects as well as diecast. Collectors know it best through its collaboration with Mini GT, and the 1:64 Kaido House line first appeared in the summer of 2021. Kaido House brings the styling and the liveries, while retailers describe the models as built on Mini GT's tooling.
What "Kaido" Means
"Kaido" is the Japanese word for a highway or main road. Kaido racer style grew out of Japan's bosozoku street scene, with exaggerated body kits, flamboyant paint and a deliberate lack of subtlety. Kaido House takes classic Japanese cars, such as Datsuns, Skylines and Fairlady Zs, and reimagines them in that spirit, with widebody styling and bold colours that most mainstream brands would never attempt.
What Sets the Models Apart
- Custom, not factory. These are not replicas of showroom cars. Every release is a styled interpretation, often with its own livery and story.
- Mini GT build quality. Retailers highlight rubber tyres, detailed interiors and, on selected models, opening hoods with painted engine bays.
- Versions and chases. The same car often returns as V1, V2 or V3 with new styling, and some releases have rare "chase" variants. Reference codes beginning with KHMG help you tell releases apart.
- A wider range than Japan. Alongside the Nissans and Hondas, the line includes a BMW M3, a Volkswagen T1 and Chevrolet trucks, all given the Kaido treatment.
